Sovereign Dates

The gold sovereign is struck in 22 carat gold, it’s 22mm diameter and weighs 7.98 grams of gold. the actual gold content of 7.315 grams and it weighs 0.2354 of Troy Ounces.

The design in which everyone associates the modern gold sovereign was first introduced in 1817 by George III.

Below are the dates in which sovereigns were produced for circulation or for collectors.

A couple of dates are missing, for example Edward VIII sovereigns as there are less than a handful known and they were struck as trial pieces.




GEORGE III

GEORGE IV

There were two different designs of sovereigns issued for George IV.

First Head
This portrait and the reverse St George and the dragon were engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci.

Second “Bare” Head
This portrait was engraved by William Wyon, from an original by Chantrey. On this George IV is not wearing laureate leaves. The reverse dies were engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen.
